Hi my family intends to visit Mount Fuji and Gotemba in a day using the JR Kanto 3day pass. Can you advise which train to take and addiditional cost. We intend to set out early in the morning from Shijnuku Station.

Hope to have a short stop at the fifth ststaion in the morning and shop at Gotemba in the aftermoon. Is this possible?

We intend to go this Friday Morning.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Pato,

The JR Kanto pass unfortunately does not cover the full route to Gotemba station. Here is a map with the exact coverage. The best way to travel to Gotemba if you do have to pass is to use the JR Kanto pass up to Atami and use local trains from there. Here is an example route.

However travel from Kawaguchiko - Gotemba by train is not very easy and takes almost 4 hours and includes many transfers. A better option is to take a local bus from Kawaguchiko - Gotemba as they run regularly and take 1470yen/70 min. Unfortunately this bus is not included in the pass. Given your itinerary all together, I think that it may actually be better to just buy ticket as you travel if you don't use the Kanto pass for any other travel than Fuji/Gotemba.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Thanks Daniel,

I forgot to tell you that I am using the Kanto Pass to Gala and spending a night over at Naspa New Otani, so I am using the Kanto Pass for the first 2 days and the third to travel to Mt Fuji and Gotemba. Seems like Gotemba is not near Kawaguchiko.

What if I stop at Otsuki, can I still go to Fuji and Gotemba. Assuming I am Ok viewing Mt Fuji from some vantage point in a lake.

Thanks again,

Pato

Hi Pato,

Yes it is possible but from where exactly do you wish to view Fuji? There are great fuji viewing places around Gotemba as well, so you could just take a train directly there. Otherwise I would recommend using the Kanto pass to Kawaguchiko and use a bus from there to Gotemba.

Hope this helps too!

Thanks Daniel,

I will take your advice and just go to Kawaguchiko and take bus to Gotemba then.
Really appreciate you prrompt reply.

Incidentally, do you know the size of the locker at Tokyo Station and what are the charges? We have those large suitcases. Will it fit in the lockers.

Best regards,

Pato

Hi Pato!

Yes pretty much every station in Japan has coin lockers ranging from backpack side to ones that can store a full size suitcase. Prices are between 300-900yen depending on size for 24H.

Best wishes,
Daniel
