Trip to Nikko from Tokyo

Hi there,

Yes a trip to Nikko is completely covered by the JR Pass! Which is great as normal tickets on the JR are relatively expansive.

To get to Nikko: Take the Tohoku shinkansen from Tokyo station to Utsunomiya, from here transfer to the Nikko line, bound for Nikko.

I would certainly recommend a visit to the Toshogu Shrine this is the reason to visit Nikko. Alternatively a visit to Kegon Waterfall is great if you wish to make some small but beautiful hikes trough the local nature.

Hi Daniel-san,
Is there any difference in using the Yamagata shinkansen instead of the Tohoku one?
Just asking because that is what Google Maps suggests (actually it suggests both)
On the same line, do you find Google Maps accurate for train travel planning? (as an option for Hyperdia)

Hi Diego,

There are different parts of the Shinkansen. The Tokaido Shinkansen for instance run between Tokyo - Osaka. The Tohoku Shinkansen between Tokyo - Shin Aomori and the Yamagate Shinkansen are a sort of mini Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shinjō. They share the same track as the Tohoku shinkansen until Fukushima.
