Hi. I am planning for a 10 days trip and is utterly confused on the rail system. Hope someone can enlighten me.
Itinerary as follows:
Tokyo - Nagano Yudanaka - Kyoto - Tokyo

Plan to buy :
- narita express (return) - store value card for subway travel in tokyo n kyoto - 7 days JR pass ( for tokyo to nagano; nagano to kyoto; kyoto to Tokyo)

Can i use JR pass and/or stored value pass on the following :

Tokyo Shinagawa line,
TokyoTamagawa line (for Kamata),
JR keihintohoku line rapid (for minami Urawa),
Hakutaka (for kanazawa),
Nagano Dentetsu limited express,
Shinano (for Nagoya),
Hikaru (for okayama),

Hello there,

Japan indeed has a lot of rail lines, trains have their own name and denotations as well. Making it quite confusing.

Tokyo Shinagawa line, not sure which line you mean. Could it be the JR Yamanote line? This one can be used with both the JR Pass or an IC card (prepaid card).

Tamagawa line is from Tokyu (private) does not accept JR Pass but does accept IC card.

JR keihintohoku line. Both JR Pass and IC card.

Hakutaka, this is a Shinkansen service on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and included in the JR Pass.

Nagano Dentetsu limited express. Private railway, requires separate tickets.

Shinano is a JR limited express service - included in the JR Pass.

Hikari - JR Shinkansen service - included in the JR Pass.
