For planning I would recommend using [Hyperdia](www.hyperdia.com]. This is a great resource for train travel in Japan. It tells you everything you would ever have to know, such as route information, travel time and number of transfers.

Hyperdia displays a lot of information, so I would recommend reading how blog post on how to plan with Hyperdia first in order to get you started!

      TKS FOR YOUR REPLY, BUT I STILL HAVE A QUESTION:

IF I ARRIVED TOKYO AT EVENING AND TRY TO GO TO SAPPORO AT SAME DAY, HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I CAN START MY TRIP, CAN I RESERVE THE SEAT ONLINE? BUT I ONLY GET THE JR PASS VOUCHER.

You can start to make seat reservations once you are in Japan and have exchanged the voucher for the actual JR Pass.
However seats rarely sell out, so you don't have to worry about not being able to board the train.

You let me know that you wish to travel to Hokkaido right away, please be careful trains stop riding after midnight, mainly for safety concerns. I would recommend to plan carefully for this. For instance if you arrive late at Narita Airport consider staying the night at Tokyo or a station along the way to Hokkaido.
