Hi,

I know it will be busy during Obon so can I just get on the correct shinkansen without a reservation and stand for the journey if there are no seats?

Also, I am planning to do a five or seven day journey with the rail pass: Tokyo>Hiroshima>Fokouka>Nagasaki>Tokyo. Is this possible with the 7 day pass?

Thank you for your time,
Dan

Hi there,

Yes - shinkansen does have standing areas in between cars, however as seat reservations are free for JR Pass holders I recommend placing all your seat reservations on arrival at Tokyo to avoid having to stand, especially on your longer journeys.

Your itinerary as stands will be covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Here are some sample itineraries for you - please note that the bullet train terminal in Fukuoka is called "Hakata":

  1. Tokyo > Hiroshima: ¥18250, (295mins, 894km)
  2. Hiroshima > Hakata: ¥8900, (69mins, 280km)
  3. Hakata > Nagasaki(nagasaki): ¥4580, (126mins, 153km)
  4. Nagasaki(nagasaki) > Tokyo: ¥25140, (499mins, 1328km)

TOTAL: ¥56870 for 4 legs

  • 07 day rail pass (¥28,300) saving: ¥28570

Hope this helps!

I'd also say reserving seat as early as possible is the best way - who really wants to stand on a train for hours on end?

About the planned schedule though, once you get past the busy areas like Tokyo and Kansai, you will find far more seats open.
Kyushu has some great sights too that few go and see. Nagasaki is the most interesting city on the island and worth a couple of days. Kagoshima could fill up a whole day nicely too - Sakurajima is wonderful, plus the Senganen Garden is superb. Beppu is famous for its hot springs, but its Hells Tour, plus monkey park/aquarium are all terrific.

For Fukuoka, there are many open parks, shopping, seaside historical areas, and urban neon. See this site as a good guide.

For Fukuoka, don't miss the Nanzoin Temple which is one of Japan's finest yet almost totally unknown to the outside world and completely FREE!

Look into a Fukuoka Tourist City Pass also.
