Hi , we are a family of 5 children aged 11,12,15 and am so confused about the best way to travel in Japan we will start our travel by train in Nagano and travel to Osaka for 4 nights then to Hiroshima for 3 nights and to Tokyo , what would be the cheapest way to buy the tickets?. Individually for each trip? Thank you for your help

Let's have a look at ticket prices and find out.
Tokyo - Nagano ¥ 8,200
Nagano - Osaka ¥ 11,790
Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 10,230
Hiroshima - Tokyo ¥ 18,560
For a total of ¥ 48,780 vs the price of a 14 day JR Pass ¥ 46,390. Remember that the JR Pass can also be used for local travel on the JR Network in Tokyo and Osaka, to the Airport and used on the ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima. All together you'll be able to make good savings with a JR Pass.
