My friends and I will be travelling to Japan the first time on January 17 2015.

I have a few questions:

  1. We arrive in Kansai and go straight to Hotel Universal Port in the Universal Studios area, we go to Universal Studios and tour around Osaka for about 3 days. Question is: Can we use the JR Pass in going around Osaka, without buying additional train tickets?

  2. From Hotel Universal Port, we then go to Mt. Fuji. Questions are: How long would be the travel time? What is the earliest time of train departure can we take? Is it advisable to do this in this season? Do we need to buy any additional train or bus tickets apart from the JR Pass? We are not planning to climb Mt. Fuji, we just want to get a really good view of it.

  3. If Mt.Fuji will not work, we are planning to go straight to Shinjuku, Tokyo then go to Disneyland. How long would be the travel time? What is the earliest time of train departure can we take?Do we need to buy any additional train or bus tickets apart from the JR Pass

  4. From Shinjuku Tokyo, we need to go back to Osaka Kansai Intl Airport. Questions are: How long would be the travel time? What is the earliest time of train departure can we take?Do we need to buy any additional train or bus tickets apart from the JR Pass?

  5. In going around Tokyo, do we need to buy any additional train or bus tickets?

Thank you in advance for taking the time! I really need help in understanding how to go around Japan.

Hello there,

1.) Yes you can use the JR Pass to travel around Osaka on the local JR Network, in addition to travel to Universal city is also covered. You may also find this map useful.

2.) Getting close to Fuji could be hard in January due to snowfall. This does not mean however that you can't enjoy the view of Fuji. I would advise a visit to Hakone which offers a great view on Fuji and also has enough of interest in case Fuji is not visible because of the clouds. Hakone can be accessed from Odawara station, which is directly on the route between Osaka - Tokyo and is about 150 minutes travel from Osaka.

3.) Travel time between Osaka - Tokyo is a little over 3 hours. Trains depart from around 6 a.m. in the morning. This trip is covered by the JR Pass, in addition local travel within Tokyo on the JR and to Disneyland is included as well.

4.) Reserve around 5H of travel time between Tokyo - Osaka Airport. Trains depart from around 6 a.m. in the morning. Most of the travel is covered but you may need to bus local tickets for travel to Osaka Airport.

5.) The JR Pass covers all travel between Osaka - Tokyo on the Shinkansen.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
