Does my 4 year old require a JR pass?

My 4 year old daughter will be coming on a 3 week trip to Japan with myself, my husband and my 8 year old son. We will be in Japan for 21 days. Starting in Tokyo, then to Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto, then back to Tokyo. From my research I think she does not actually require one (but will not get a seat unless unoccupied), however I think she would need her own seat for the longer trips - down to Hiroshima. I read somewhere I can just pay a small amount extra for a seat for my daughter?
Would love some advice :)
Also - I am wondering if it is more economical for us to buy the passes? It will be about $1800 for the 3 of us without my daughters pass, doing these trips alone does not save us money according to the JR pass calculator, however we will be doing a fair amount of local travel and want to use the ferry to go to Miyajima as well. Are the JR trains etc accessible enough that we would generally find them easily enough without putting ourselves out to search for them the whole trip?

Hi there,

How many days will you spend in each city, perhaps you could look at using a 7 day or 14 day JR Pass instead. This may be more cost efficient, depending on how many days you stay in each city.

For children below the age of 6, they can travel for free as long as there's 1 adult per child but as you know, they won't be entitled to a seat. You can always buy tickets for them at half of the price (a child ticket). This is a choice you have to make however.

JR trains are easy to find, it is basically going to the station, that's all :) If you doubt about a certain station, just open it in Google Maps and it will tell you want trains/lines stop there.

Tokyo 4th-8th
Hiroshima 8th-11th (with ferry trip to Miyajima)
Osaka 11th-15th
Kyoto 15th-19th
Tokyo 19th-24th

We will be taking JR trains in between locations. When I input this into the JR pass calculator it wasn’t cheaper. However I did not add the ferry trip.
Because we spend small amounts of time in each area it’s hard to nail down what days we would get a shorter pass for. And we need airport transfer train also which I believe is part of the pass

Hi again,

As suggested in my first post, a 21 day JR Pass would likely not be the most cost efficient option. A 7 or 14 day JR Pass however would be when you use it to cover your longer trips. E.g. 7 days for travel to Hiroshima and Osaka or a 14 day JR Pass for travel to Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto and back to Tokyo. The most cost efficient option would be that 7 day JR Pass option, though you could consider the 14 day JR Pass for the extra flexibility it offers.
