If I want a pass that is valid from 17 to 24 January (inclusive) do I need a 7 day pass or 14 day pass?
Thanks

Hi Philip,

If you buy a rail pass for 7 days it will be valid from the 17th to the 23rd so you would need a 14 day pass to cover it all.

However there are many ways get around on a budget, so if you tell us your itinerary we can help you plan with a 7 day pass!

Kind regards,
-Daniel

Thanks.

I want to do this itinerary if possible. But I can be a bit flexible:

13 - 17 Jan in Tokyo
17 - 20 Jan in Kyoto
20 - 22 Jan in Osaka
22 - 24 Jan in Hiroshima
24 - 26 Jan in Tokyo.

So, to clarify, I need these trains:

17 Jan - Tokyo to Kyoto
20 Jan - Kyoto to Osaka
22 Jan - Osaka to Hiroshima
24 Jan - Hiroshima to Tokyo

Thanks :)

Just a quick overview of ticket prices.

Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,020
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540
Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 9,750
Hiroshima - Osaka ¥ 17,850

Total would be ¥ 41160
A 7-day pass is ¥ 28300 (saving 12860) and 14-day pass ¥ 45.100.

Depending on your own preferences there are two general options.

7-day pass.
This is probably the most economic option, you could choose a 7day-pass. This would mean shortening your trip outside of Tokyo by a day. You could decide to spend one day less in Hiroshima for instance, it is definitely possible to see most major attractions there in a day.

Or you could opt for a 14-day pass this is the most convenient and flexible option. It would cover all of your days in Japan. If you fly from Narita it will also cover your transport between Tokyo and Narita Airport which is about 3000Yen/One way + Local trains in Tokyo. Taking the prices above in mind this would already save you 2000Yen. If you take this option you could also add an extra destination or change your plans whenever you want.

Let me know what you think!

THanks for the advice. I have gone for the 14 day, so there's no pressure for me to keep those dates.
When i arrive at Narita, can I use the pass to get into Tokyo? How would I go about that?
Thanks

Hi Philip,

When you arrive @ Narita Airport, go down to the trains, here you can activate your Railpass at the Travel Service Centre and at the same time get your tickets to Tokyo. When you exchange your pass the staff will most likely ask if you would like to make any seat reservations as well, otherwise just tell them you would like to make seat reservations on the Narita Express to Tokyo.

Happy Holidays and have a good trip!
-Daniel
