The JR Pass can be purchased for 7, 14 or 21 days. Depending on your travel you could consider a 7 day JR Pass as you could still make good savings with it. Additionally it is always possible to purchase normal tickets.

Normal tickets can be purchased/reserved at any JR Station within Japan.

It is not possible to buy tickets online without a good understanding of Japanese. If you can speak Japanese or have a Japanese friend than you could use Eki Net for online reservations. You may also need a Japanese credit-card for the confirmation.
