We will be taking a day trip from Tokyo to Hakone
We need a train from Tokyo to Kyoto and back (different dates)
A train to from Kyoto to Nara and back (same day)
A train from Kyoto to Arishyama and back (same day)
Is it cheaper to just get return ticket Tokyo/Kyoto and then local transport cards in Kyoto?
We are in Japan 10 days total

A 7-day Japan Rail Pass would be well worth it here, given that you would use it for the return trip Tokyo - Kyoto. You can also use the JR Pass to access Nara and Arashiyama.
