Will I get my money worth?

Depending on your exact schedule a JR Pass could certainly be useful. The 7 day JR Pass basically is the same price as a normal return Tokyo - Kyoto or Tokyo - Osaka using the Shinkansen. If you make the return within 7 days then I would recommend a JR Pass, as you can also use it for local travel between Kyoto - Osaka as well as for local travel within Osaka and Kyoto on JR lines.
