Tokyo -> Fukuoka Itinerary

Hi,

I will be flying to Tokyo on the morning of 8 Jul and flying out from Fukuoka on the morning of 21 Jul. In between I intend to get a 7 day JR rail pass as I will have to be in Tokyo until 12 Jul. I am in my early twenties and will be traveling with a friend, so we are expecting to be able to manage a faster pace of travel. We both don't drive, however, so we will need to rely solely on public transportation.

Could you please help to check my itineraries below, and perhaps suggest what I could cut out if it’s too rushed? I haven't exactly decided where I want to go so I have 2 itineraries. I've also included some places I'd like to go to but that I know may be too much of a rush:

ITINERARY 1
8 - 13: Tokyo (day trips to Yokohama & Fuji 5 Lakes)
Start 7 day JR pass on 13th
13 - 14: Kamikochi via Matsumoto
14 - 15: Takayama
15 - 16: Shirakawa-go
16 - 17: Kanazawa
17-19: Nagasaki
End 7 day JR pass on 19th in Fukuoka
21 - Fly out from Fukuoka

ITINERARY 2
8 - 13: Tokyo (day trips to Yokohama & Fuji 5 Lakes)
Start 7 day JR pass on 13th
13 - 16: Kyoto (day trips to Nara and Kobe)
16 - 17: Hiroshima & Miyajima
17-19: Nagasaki
End 7 day JR pass on 19th in Fukuoka
21 - Fly out from Fukuoka

Really looking forward to your advice!

Hi there,

Both itinerary are viable, though adding Nagasaki near the end will add a lot of travel time. As a first trip to Japan, I would go with option 2. As I think it will give you a broader experience of what Japan is these days. The Japanese alps are a nice place to visit for sure but in a way Matsumoto, Takayama and Kanazawa are more of the same. While there is a greater variety between Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. It is also possible to fit in a visit to Koya-san if you wish to mix in a bit more tradition Japan.

It is also possible to combine Itinerary 1 and 2 and visit one of the stops in the Japanese Alps, before going on to Kyoto. Both Matsumoto and Kanazawa would be easy to add in as a stop on the way to Kyoto and you'd still see the Japanese Alps.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
