Should I use the JR Pass?

I've made a quick list of ticket prices to see if a JR Pass would work!

Narita Airport - Shinjuku ¥ 3,190
Shinjuku - Osaka ¥ 14,140
Osaka - Kamenoko ¥ 7,210
Kamenoko - Kyoto ¥ 8,610
Kyoto - Nara (return) 1,420
Kyoto - Takayama ¥ 9,960
Takayama - Shinjuku ¥ 14,710

For a total of ¥ 59,240 the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390, so you could make at least ¥ 12,850 in savings.

When should we purchase the JR Pass?

Do we need to pre-book seats for all our travel? If so, how far in advanced should we book seats?

Hi there,

Not unless you plan to travel during a national holiday period. Even so it's nice to have reserved seat, you can make seat reservations 15-20 minutes before depature.
