Question about my itinerary

Hi:

We are traveling to Japan for the first time and want to end in Tokyo to visit our son. Can you please tell me if you think this a good trip or if I should cut out Kanazawa:

Option 1: Kyoto (5 nights), Kanazawa (3 nights), Hakone (2 nights), Tokyo (5 nights)
Option 2: Kyoto (6 nights), Hakone (3 nights), Tokyo (6 nights)

I don't want to spend a lot of time traveling from place to place. We enjoy walking and experiencing the culture, and are happy to do day trips. My concern is I am not sure of the train time from Kanazawa to Hakoen, and is three nights too long there?

Hi there,

Personally I really like Kanazawa and I am sure that you will enjoy it too, as you like culture and walking around. Kanazawa has many beautiful parks, gardens, the Kanazawa castle grounds and more. The trip from there to Hakone however is a bit of a ride, it would mean taking the Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Tokyo (178 Minutes) and then from Tokyo - Odawara (36 minutes), its all on the bullet train and comfortable but still will take some time.

3 Nights is quite a long time for Kanazawa, I think most people will see the city in 1-2 days. However it does make for a great opportunity to make a day trip to Shirakawa-go or Takayama. 2 Nights Hakone is also on the long side, I think most people would visit it as a day trip from Tokyo or do a 1 night stay there, though there are good side trips to be made to Fuji Five lakes and Izu.

Thank you for your reply. If you had 15 nights and wanted to start in Kyoto and end in Tokyo what would you suggest? Which train pass would make sense?

Hi again,

With 15 nights, I do think that you would have enough time to visit Kanazawa and Hakone.

As for the JR Pass, it depends on how much additional travel you would with it. Going one way Kyoto - Tokyo, however would not be enough to make savings using a JR Pass. As the route is now I would buy normal tickets, add-in a little more travel and a JR Pass would quickly be worth it. Think of the earlier mentioned visit to Takayama, or a side trip from Tokyo to Nikko.
