Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo

Hello all,

I'm helping a friend organize his trip to Japan. He's arriving in Osaka where he'll stay for a week for business purposes and then he has 6 days over to reach Tokyo before returning home (so the free days are from the 3rd of November to the 9th - flight home).

I'm thinking he can spend a couple of days in Kyoto (with an eventual day trip to Nara) and then head to Tokyo where he could spend maybe 2 days.

I have a few questions though:

  • Would it compensate to get the JR train pass for this itinerary?
  • Are there other suggestions on things to do and see on those days?
  • Are there city pass for Kyoto? I know there is one for Tokyo but haven't found anything for Kyoto yet?

Thank you so much.

Hi there!

Sounds like a good itinerary! You could possibly mix in a trip to an onsen (I recommend Kurokawa Onsen if your friend is in Kansai and has a JR Pass, but there are many others), or a day trip to Hiroshima, Nikko or Kamakura depending on how active you think your friend will want to make his stay.

If your friend is flying out from Tokyo, then I don't think a 7 day rail pass will be worth it unless he does over ¥28,300 worth of JR travel. As a single bullet from Osaka > Tokyo is ¥13,500 he'll need to do more travel than just this leg in order for a JR Pass to be worthwhile. You can look up train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for Japan Rail Pass holders through our video blog.

There are city bus and subway passes for Kyoto, you can see a full list of them on the municipal website here. You should also look into the Kansai thru pass as another option to cover Osaka, Kyoto and Nara if you do not decide to go for a JR Pass.

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot.

I'll keep on doing some research and I think that with your tips I already have a lot to start from.

Cheers,
