Not Sure Which Pass to Get

Hi all,

Apologies, feeling a bit lost and would be very grateful for any advice on which railpass to buy! My wife and I are planning the following itinerary; travelling just the two of us.

Arrival - Haneda - Wed 13 Jun 2018 - 07:10

Departure - Haneda - Mon 25 Jun 2018 - 08:50

Tokyo: 4 nights
Osaka: 3 nights
Miyajima: 1 night
Kyoto: 3 nights
Tokyo: 1 night

Total: 12 nights

At each location we are planning on travelling around quite a bit to see all we can, however I think the main travel days will be from Osaka and Kyoto as below

We are planning on visiting Nara and Himeji whilst staying in Osaka, and will visit Hiroshima on the way down to Miyajima.

We are planning on visiting Arashiyama whilst staying in Kyoto

We are still planning on where to visit around Tokyo so a pass that allows us to visit any nearby sites would be great - We are considering Jigokudani Monkey Park as one example

Could anyone please offer an opinion on which pass to buy? The regional breakdown for the list of available passes is making it a harder decision and we definitely don't want to be caught out anywhere.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hello Chris,

When you look at options that are applicable to your itinerary, it is quite an easy option. First let's look at what passes actually cover your travel, the only pass that covers all regions you visit (Tokyo, Kansai and Hiroshima) is the Japan Rail Pass. Now, let's match a duration. Your travel from Tokyo - Osaka - Miyajima - Kyoto - Tokyo is 7 night or 8 days, that means you more than a 7 day pass. So the 14 day JR Pass is the next best option. You also cover more than enough travel cost for a 14 day JR Pass to be cost efficient, especially if you plan on going to Himeji and possible Nagano (for the Snow Monkies). Add to that travel to and from the airport, local JR lines in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka and you've got yourself a really good deal!

One side note, Jigokudani is a bit far from Tokyo and will require a full day and a good bit of planning. Going to Nikko is a great alternative.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
