Hi All,

Would really appreciate some help with deciding whether JR pass is something that would be worth while for us.

We are 3 adults travelling across Japan in May and we are trying to decide if JR Pass would be the way to go.

Here is a brief itinerary that we have at the moment:

Day 1 - Arrive in Narita and stay in Tokyo. Cover the city
Day 2 - Day trip to Nikko and then back to Tokyo
Day 3 - Tokyo City
Day 4 - Day trip to Nissan Factory in Yokohama and then back to Tokyo
Day 5 - Tokyo City
Day 6 - Day trip to Kamakura and then back to Tokyo
Day 7 - Day trip to Fuji Five Lakes and then back to Tokyo
Day 8 - Travel to Kyoto and stay there
Day 9 - Day trip to Irani Shrine and then back to Kyoto
Day 10 - Kyoto City
Day 11 - Day trip to Mount Koya and then back to Kyoto
Day 12 - Day trip to Nara and then back to Kyoto
Day 13 - Day trip to Toyota factory in Nagoya and then back to Kyoto
Day 14 - Travel to Osaka and stay there
Day 15 - Visit Universal Studio in Osaka
Day 16 - Osaka City
Day 17 - Day trip to Miyajima and then back to Osaka
Day 18 - Day trip to Himeji and then back to Osaka
Day 19 - Travel to Hiroshima and stay there
Day 20 - Visit Mazda factory and
Day 21 - Travel to Nagasaki and stay there
Day 22 - Travel to Tokyo and stay there
Day 23 - Tokyo City - Fly out from Narita

The idea at the moment is to buy the 21 day JR Pass and use it for all the major routes. If anyone knows which routes listed here won't be covered and can point them out that would be appreciated.

We are flexible with moving a day here or there based on recommendations.

Regards,

Ani

Hello Ani,

I would also use a 21 day JR Pass here. You will be exploring a lot of Japan and you can make very good savings compared to purchasing normal train tickets.

The following parts are partly or not covered by the JR Pass.

Travel from Tokyo - Fuji Five Lakes. We have a post with the details here.

Part of the way to Koya between Shin-Imamiya and Gokurakubashi find the details here.

You may also need local travel within cities that is not included in the JR Pass. All these parts however are very minor in the grand scheme of your itinerary and you will make outstanding use of the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
