Tips and suggestions

Hi,

Me and my brother are in the midst of planning a trip to Japan in late october/ early november. We will arrive in Fukuoka in the morning of the 27th and will fly out from Tokyo around november 7/8/9th. The planning is still very much in the air but we have some things we would like to do but we're very flexible and suggestions along the way is greatly appreciated. I'm going to put up a very "soft" and diffuse itinerary so we have some stuff to work with before I get to my more specific questions :)

Landing in Fukuoka (Probably just spend a night there before we start our journey)

  • Mt Aso with surroundings. I'd like to spend a day/night in the Kurokawa onsen area.

  • Hiroshima and Miyajima (1/2 days. Maybe a combined day trip from Kyoto or Osaka?)

  • Kyoto 2/3 days

  • Osaka 2/3 days

  • Tokyo 4/5 days

Likely some day trips or overnight trips from Tokyo. Maybe from Osaka/Kyoto as well.

Not sure my math is correct, but as I said we're pretty flexible. I'm pretty sure we're going to buy the JR Pass but I wonder if anyone has any suggestions whether we should go for a 7 or 14 day pass.

I've read that the rail roads to mt Aso was destroyed by the earthquake in 2016 but is it still possible to get to the volcano with the JR pass?

Have I missed something really cool on our way that I have to include? Every suggestion is welcome. Hope you understand my ramblings. Have a good evening.

Thanks.
Johan

Hi Johan,

I think a 7 day JR Pass would work if used to travel from Hakata (Fukuoka) to Tokyo with all the planned in stops. A 14 day JR Pass would be nice too but you'd have to do a little more travel, such as a side visit to Takayama or Kanazawa. All really nice places and you would have more flexibility for your stays in Kyoto and Osaka with a 14 day JR Pass as well.

It is possible to visit Aso with the JR Pass but there may not be that much to do except for hiking to get a view of the Caldera.

I think you may also like a quick visit to Onomichi, you could visit it from Hiroshima. This harbor town is has a very relax atmosphere and is a great place for day dreaming. You can try the local Ramen styles, walk along the temples in the mountains and view the islands of Shikoku in the distance.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
