Which pass for Nozawa-Kyoto-Tokyo

I am travelling on a holiday in January 2018 in a family of four (two adults + two children aged 10 & 12). We arrive in Tokyo on 3rd January and our itinerary from there is as follows:

Nozawa Onsen for 7 nights from 3 - 10 Jan (train required from Tokyo to Iiyama)
Kyoto for 3 nights from 10 Jan - 13 Jan (train from Iiyama to Kyoto)
Tokyo for 4 nights from 13 Jan to 17 Jan (train from Kyoto to Tokyo)

Can you please tell me if it is better to buy single tickets for the four of us for each leg of the trip or a JR pass (or even a combination of the two)?

Many thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

I think the best option would be to buy normal tickets. A 7 day JR Pass would have been good if you did the full route in 7 days but you don't cover enough in travel costs for a 14 day JR Pass to help you make savings.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Sorry but just to clarify - the cost of individual tickets on the JR Pass Fare Calc is JPY34,670 in total which is about JPY 8,000 cheaper that buying a JR Pass for 7 days and an individual ticket for one of the legs (JPY29,110 + JPY13,910 = JPY 43,020). Is my understanding correct?

Also, is it possible to buy the individual tickets in advance or should I just buy them when I arrive in Japan?

Many thanks for your help
Paul

Hi Paul,

Sorry, I think part of your question is misphrased?

I did indeed mean to say that a 7 day JR Pass + normal tickets for the rest would be the most economic option. ((JPY29,110 + JPY13,910 = JPY 43,020)).

Hope this helps!
Daniel
