Travel on Tokaido Shinkansen

Hi,
I have two questions.

  1. I have been looking at travelling on the Tokaido Shinkansen line to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Osaka but can't find any trains which are not Nozomi bullet trains. I understand Nozomi trains are not included in the Rail Pass. So, does this mean travelling between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka isn't covered by the Railpass? Or, if so, what times during a weekday do valid trains go? Our travel dates will be in mid March 2023 (if Japan opens up to independent travellers again).

  2. Also, what is the easiest way, using the Rail Pass, to travel from Hiroshima to Kanazawa? Our planned travel dates will be in mid March 2023 (if Japan is open to independent travellers by then).

Hi there,

1.) You can use the Hikari service on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo - Kyoto and Osaka. This is the same train, route and comfort as the Nozomi, the only difference is that there are slightly more stops along the way. In most cases, visitors will not even notice the difference.

2.) To travel from Hiroshima to Kanazawa, take the Shinkansen back to Kansai (either Shin-Kobe, Shin-Osaka or Kyoto stations) and take a ltd. express train from there to Kanazawa. The best route will depend on what time you travel, and the JR Staff will always book the best trains possible for you when making reservations.

I'm 100% positive that Japan will be open again by the end of this year :)
