Which rail pass?

I was looking at your itinerary for the best option(s). However what I was wondering about is whether you'll make the approach to the Alpine route via Toyama or Shinano-Omachi? Could you please let me know which you plan on taking, this way I could find the best option for you!

Glad you like our itinerary! We were thinking of going to Murodo via Shinano-Omachi. We thought it was probably quickest that way, taking a direct train from Tokyo to Matsumoto and then travelling on from there.

Thank you for the clarification. Now let's have a look at ticket prices and see if the JR Pass would be a good buy.

Tokyo - Matsumoto ¥ 6,900
Murodo - Kamikochi, traveled on non-JR bus/transport
Kamikochi - Kyoto, travel to Takayama by bus from there rail to Kyoto ¥ 9,960
Kyoto - Uno for ferry to Naoshima ¥ 9,130
Setoda - Mainland with ferry, you could take the train from Sunami to Hiroshima ¥ 3,570
Hiroshima - Kagoshima ¥ 17,670

For a total of ¥ 47,230 the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390, meaning you could make small savings. However since I did not know the exact transport methods you, please see this as an estimate only.
