Hi,

Me and my girlfriend will be travelling around Japan in February 2016 for around 19 days. Would you be able to give us some advice/look over our planned itinerary to see if it is plausible of the amount of time we are going for and also we are looking on purchasing the 14 day JR rail pass and want to know if we can use this pass for all our planned journeys.

Itinerary:

Shanghai - Hiroshima airport (arriving on Feb 3rd). Spend 2 days here visiting tourist attractions.

6th Feb travel from Hiroshima to Osaka by train (using JR pass) (arriving 6th Feb). Spend 3 days here (1 day trip to Nara) 2 days visiting tourist attractions in Osaka.

10th Feb travel from Osaka to Kyoto by train (using JR pass) (arriving 10th Feb). Spend 3 days here (1 day/night visiting Mt Koya) 2 days visiting tourist attractions in Kyoto.

14th Feb travel from Kyoto to Hakone by train (using JR pass) (arrive 14th Feb). Spend 2 days here (1 day hot springs) 1 day visiting tourist attractions, cable car Mt Fuji etc.

17th Feb travel from Hakone to Tokyo by train (using JR pass) (arrive 17th Feb). Spend 3 days here (1 day trip five lakes to visit lake kawakuchiko) 2 days visiting tourist attractions in Tokyo.

21st Feb Tokyo airport to Shanghai.

I would appreciate any information/advice.

Thanks.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I checked your itinerary for the best option and while the JR Pass covers the major part of your itinerary, it would be better to just buy normal tickets as they will cost less than the price of a 14 day JR Pass. This is mainly because you make a one way trip from Hiroshima - Tokyo, and most of the places you visit are directly on the route. A 14 day JR Pass would have been useful if you used it to return to Hiroshima from Tokyo too.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Thanks for your response Dan it is very much appreciated. Do you know of prices I am to expect for trains? Is there a website that I can buy train tickets from online in advance prior to my trip, so its one less thing to worry about. Also, do you have an idea of what type of train I will be using for my travels, will it predominantly be the shinkansen?

Thanks.
Andrew

Hi Adrew,

Trains between the bigger cities are mostly Shinkansen. Between For instance between Hiroshima - Osaka and Kyoto - Hakone/Tokyo.

You can use www.hyperdia.com to look up ticket prices, route information and much more. Tickets can only be reserved once you are in Japan. However trains rarely sell out and you can normally just buy minutes before departure.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
