Hi,

I'll be in Japan from July 30th to August 9th.

We are planning to visit these cities. We were thinking of using the JR pass on August 2nd.

Arrival at Narita Airport.
Travel to Shinjuku - staying there for 4 days
Travel to Osaka staying 4 days - in this period, we plan on making day trips to Kobe and Kyoto.
and from Osaka, we will travel to Narita Airport.

Summary:
here are the major trips.
Narita - Shinjuku for 2days (planning to use JR for trips within tokyo) - (Actual use August 2nd to August 5th)
Shinjuku - Osaka (August 5th)
Osaka - Kobe(August 6th)
Kobe-Osaka
Osaka - Kyoto (August 7th)
Kyoto -Osaka
Osaka - Narita (August 9th)

Purchase of 7 day JR pass on August 2nd - August 9th.

Yes, for an itinerary like this you will make good savings of ¥3560 with a JR Pass if you start on Aug 2nd. Please see your ticket breakdown below:

Tokyo > Osaka: ¥13750, (194mins, 556km)
Osaka > Kobe(hyogo): ¥390, (24mins, 33km)
Kobe(hyogo) > Osaka: ¥390, (25mins, 33km)
Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540, (29mins, 42km)
Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540, (28mins, 42km)
Osaka > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥16250, (272mins, 635km)

TOTAL: ¥31860 for 6 legs

Ah yes, good point! You Should start the pass on the 3rd so you get your long distance trip in on the 9th. This shouldn't affect your savings calculation above.
