Do I need a JR pass

Hello, I am travelling to Japan on May 11 - June 1 this year.
Our basic itinerary goes as follow:

May 11 - 17 : Tokyo (Possible day trip to Hakone)
May 17 - 23: Kyoto (Day trips to Nara, Arashiyama)
May 23 - 29: Osaka (Day trip to Kobe, visiting USJ)
May 29 - June 1: Back to Tokyo

We will be doing a fair bit of travelling within the cities too so lots of trains.
Please can someone let me know which JR Pass would be suitable or if I'll even need one?

Hi there,

I recommend using a 7-day Japan Rail Pass to those who make a return trip Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka within the validity period. For you, this is almost two weeks. A 14-day JR Pass could be worth it, but it would really depend on how much you use it on a daily basis and on what side trips you'll make.

I suggest using the JR Fare calculator to see what your expected total travel costs will be and if you can make savings using the pass.

You could also add a day trip or two using the Shinkansen, such as to Himeji or Hiroshima. This way, you'd get great use out of any pass.

Thank you for your swift reply.

So I might purchase the 14 day pass - since I will mostly do day trips and start long distance travel from only day 6.. will it make sense to activate it from when I leave Tokyo to go to Kyoto? And for all the inter city trips in Tokyo I will use IC card? Does this make sense?
