20 days in Japan

Hey every one, its my first post, i hope u guys can help me with this, I'm planning the trip of my life, i always wanted to go to Japan, so i save some money an I'm planing do it by October, I have read a lot and indeed get the JR pass is the best choose, but I'm a little concern on how much more do i have to spend,

Above , my schedule, i don't know if is a little ambitious but i really want to visit a lot of places.

My questions are:

What is not covered in the JR pass, I'm not sure if going to Nikko is covered, but i know that part of the Koyasan travel is not covered?, so it ll be really helpful to know and if possible the estimated cost ( i know that there are some apps that give you some of this information, but maybe your experience can help me to take better decisions) of non covered rides to the places that i want to go.

Is better to get a 14 days pass, and pay the price of some tickets, or get the 21 pass?

If possible how do i get there, is the first time in Japan, so any help will be nice,?

And last, any suggestions, commentaries are Welcome!

Hi there,

Basically all of your travel is covered, except for the last part to Koya. Which is a very limited part and costs 870 yen by rapid express train from Tokyo. For the rest, all is covered, including travel to Nikko, between Narita Airpor - Tokyo and even the ferry to Miyajima.

In terms of JR Pass, either a 14 or 21 day JR Pass would help you make amazing savings over normal tickets. I think you'll need 3 weeks for sure to cover the above itinerary and would advise the 21 day JR Pass to avoid rushing everything.

Most of the route is pretty straightforward and easy to travel. You could save some travel time by going to Takayama after Yokohama and then traveling to Arashiyama, which is part of Kyoto. This would save you at least 6 hours of travel.

Travel to Nikko is included in the JR Pass and you can use the Shinkansen for part of the way. To travel from Tokyo to Nikko, first travel to Tokyo station, here you can get on the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya, here transfer to the Nikko line bound for Nikko.

I also would like to give you some pointers for Fuji, there is not one single place to visit Fuji. Instead there are different area's around the mountain. Popular places to visit include Fuji five Lakes(of which the first lake is called Kawaguchiko), Hakone or Gotemba. I would advise reading more about visiting Fuji and then select an area you find most interesting. The Wiki Voyage Fuji page is a good place to start.
