Hi, i would like to ask about how should i go from...

I'll be traveling from Nagoya to Tokyo, thus i wanted visit Hakone/Lake-Ashi in between for Mt.Fuji view.
How should i go so that it will be a smooth trip to Tokyo?

Also, i have already bought my 7 day Jr pass..

however, i will only start on the 2nd of my trip so that i can use it last day to travel from Nagoya to Tokyo.

I think i'll list my draft itinerary for you to see...

4/5 arrive Fukuoka
4/6 activate jrpass [ibusuki-aso farmland]
4/7 fukuoka
4/8 osaka
4/9 osaka
4/10 osaka
4/11 nagoya
4/12 nagoya-tokyo [between to hakone] end jrpass
4/13 tokyo
4/14 tokyo [chiba]
4/15 tokyo-narita

as i plan to visit aso farmland on the 6th with ibusuki, but it seems the schedule is slightly tight though doable....
however, i feel like to move it to the 1st day so it will be more flexible... but i will need to purchase a kyushu pass to cover the trip. so i'm kind of not sure what to do.

i thought of getting the 3day kyushu pass + jrpass...
activate jr pass on 8th, ends 14th. but i can't use it for travel to narita. or is it better?

thus, do you think i should remain the original one? and just pay 3,000 to narita and maybe hakone pass?since the jrpass won't do anything much in Tokyo.

Thank you

Hi there,

This may seem strange, but have you considered simply going for a 14 day full Japan Rail Pass rather than a 3 day kyushu pass & 7 day JR Pass? If you add up the prices it actually makes a lot of sense. Here are the prices for comparison:

  • 3 day Kyushu pass + 7 day Japan Rail Pass + Tokyo + Narita Express = ¥14000 + ¥28300 + ¥4000 = ¥46,300
  • 14 day rail pass: ¥45,100

Also, you have the possibility to visit Kamakura, Yokohama and Nikko for free while you are in Tokyo (as well as using other JR lines when needed).

For Hakone, your best bet it to disembark at Odawara and use the Odakyu lines to travel up to Hakone for the day. It may be better buying separate tickets for this rather than a 2 day pass as you will only be there for 1 day, but please check with the ticket office for on arrival at Odawara.

hope this helps!

Hi there,

Hmm- if you have already purchased a 7 day rail pass then you have a decision to make... In general, once purchased, a refund will cost between 10-15% of the original cost of the rail pass so you make want to consider costs here.

If you don't think it's a good idea to refund, I would advise you to go for the 3day Kyushu pass and start the 7 day rail pass on the 8th. Although you'll have to pay for the Narita trip, you will also get good value from the rail pass with the extra day trips you mention around Tokyo.

The information on Hyperdia is valid as currently published. The schedule may be updated at any time up to your date of travel, but in general it will only be small changes to times and so shouldn't affect your planning.

Hope this helps!
