I am really confused as to buy the JR pass or stick to the normal ticket for our upcoming family trip with 2 young kids.

We are entering Tokyo from Haneda airport midnight time (so will book a cab) and exiting from Kansai airport.

Our plan is:
Day 1 - 3 : From Haneda, to book a cab directly to Disney resort. Will not be using transport afterwards as spending in Disneyland
Day 4 - 7 : To start using the train. Transfer from Disney hotel to Ryumeikan hotel (near to Tokyo station). Will spend 4 days doing sightseeings in Tokyo and 1-day to Mount Fuji.
Day 8 - 10 : Bullet train to Osaka, stay in a hotel near to Universal studio. Plan to go to Kyoto / Kobe
Day 11: Universal studio and take airport limousine to Kansai airport

Many thanks for your help.

Hi there!

Looking at the legs that you travel, I think that buying normal tickets will be the best way to go. The JR Pass is great if you make a couple of trips on the bullet train or other longer distance travel. The most expancive part of your travel costs will be Tokyo - Osaka but all other travel is relatively minor, so that's why I think buying tickets as your travel is the best way to go.

I think your kids may really like Fushimi Inari Taisha when you visit Kyoto and personally I think that it's a great visit.

I hope this helps!

Thanks Daniel san for your reply.

Can I ask you again. There is an option to buy tourist daily pass for Tokyo metro that cost Y600 - would you recommend this?
How about to travel in Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe, is there any similar subway pass that also cover the buses for Kyoto? Or JR is the way to travel in this area?

Thanks again, appreciate your help.

Hi Again!

There is a Tokyo Metro Pass available for 710yen and allows for unlimited travel on the Tokyo Metro for a single day. This can be helpful if you travel around the city.

As for Kyoto/Osaka/Kobe, there are rail passes available in this area but I don't think that they would help you save money or be very helpful. Instead I would recommend buying an IC card for everyone in your travel company, to make travel easier.

For Kyoto consider buying a Kyoto Bus Pas which is 500yen and allows for unlimited travel on buses in Kyoto for a single day. Normal tickets are 220/yen a ride, so this is a great way to make savings quickly!

Hope this helps too!
Daniel
