7 or 14 days JR rail pass

Hi,

My family will be touring Japan from May 23 to June 5. We will spend 13 days covering Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. We are not sure whether to get a 7 days or 14 days pass. Here is our itinerary:

24 May Arrive Narita and travel to Tobu Hotel Levant
24-29 May 6 days in Tokyo
29 May, 1 day Sakai Osaka,
30 - 31 May, 1 day Osaka, maybe go to Nara Park
1 June in Kyoto, day trip
2 June, Osaka to Hiroshima
3 June, back to Tokyo
4 June, Tokyo to Kamakura
5 Jan, Leave from Narita

We thought about the following options:
1. Buy a 7 days JR pass and use from 29 May - 4 June
2. Buy a 14 days JR pass and use from 24 May - 5 June. However we are not sure whether it’s worth the pass to cover the Tokyo city travel.

Could you please recommend a better option for us or suggest any amendment to our plan? Thanks a lot!

Hi there,

The best option would be to use a 7-day JR Pass for 29 May - 4 June. This is the period where you travel the most and where the best savings using a Japan Rail pass are to be had. Outside of this period you do not travel much (in terms of cost/distance) and buying normal tickets will not add up to a lot there.

As it stands, your itinerary looks good to me! You could consider staying the last night near Narita Airport if you have an early flight. This way you can also cover travel to Narita Airport using the JR Pass.

Thank you so much Daniel! My flight is at 4 pm on June 5. Can I still use the jr pass? I believe that if I activate the jr pass on May 29, it expires at 12 am June 5.
