Should I buy 1 week or 2 week JR pass?

Hi there!

I am unsure if I should buy the 1 or 2 week JR pass, my first and last few days I will just be travelling locally in Tokyo.
And if I buy 1 week JR pass when should I start it?

Also, when should we book our seats to travel on 31st December? I can imagine it will be very busy! Should I book seats as soon as we arrive in Japan?

This is my itinerary:
December
29 Tokyo (arrive in Narita)
30 Tokyo
31 Tokyo to Kyoto
January
1 Kyoto (day trip to Nara)
2 Kyoto (day trip to Hiroshima)
3 Kyoto to Osaka
4 Osaka
5 Osaka
6 Osaka to Koya San
7 Koya San to Tokyo
8 Tokyo
9 Tokyo
10 Tokyo (depart from Narita)

Hello Holly,

I was looking at your itinerary and my recommendation would be to use a 14 day JR Pass for your travel around Japan. You will be traveling long distances (especially to Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima) and a 14 day JR Pass will work very well here.

The 31st may just be the busiest day of the year! Be sure to get your tickets the moment that you arrive in Japan.

Thank you very much for your advice. We will be sure to buy the 14 day JR pass.

Would it be worth buying the first class ticket as we will be travelling during very busy periods? (To have a better chance of being able to book seats)

Would it be a good idea to buy 7 days regular JR pass and the following 7days First class JR pass? Is that possible?!
