Itinerary Check Tokyo to Hiroshima 9 Days

Hello Daniel,

Could you please check my itinerary below for our Japan vacation in September. We are getting the 7 day JR Pass and we're 2 days short. I wanted to know if we should use the JR Pass for the NEX from Narita Airport to Tokyo or save that days worth of JR Pass to travel from Osaka to Kyoto on day 8. On day 9, we would just travel around Osaka without the JR pass (using the ic card?).

Should we use the JR Pass to travel from Osaka to Kyoto or use the JR Pass to travel from Narita Airport (NEX or other) to Tokyo?

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo at 2pm
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Mt. Fuji
Day 4: Hakone
Day 5: Kamakura
Day 6: Travel to Osaka to stay
Day 7: Hiroshima
Day 8: Kyoto
Day 9: Osaka
Day 10: Fly home

Hi there,

Yes, the Narita Express is covered by the JR Pass. I do think using the 7-day Japan Rail Pass for Day 1 - Day 7 makes sense. This is the period that you travel the most and where you can make good savings using the pass. That's assuming you visit Hiroshima as a day trip and are back in Osaka on Day 7 (?).

Travel to Kyoto, within Osaka and to the Airport won't cost a lot but if you prefer to have a pass, then you could look at a Kansai Area Pass for the last couple of days.

Yes, we are planning a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima and back to Osaka. We will look into the Kansai Area Pass so we can use the JR Pass on Day #1 on the NEX.
