Hi,

I think a 14 day pass will be our best option, but I want to confirm. Maybe the Kintetsu 3 day pass would be better if we don't go to Hiroshima?

Day 1 - arrive narita, stay in Tokyo - Shinjuku (buy suica-NEX pass?)
Day 2 - tokyo to hakodate on shinkansen (start 14 day pass?)
Day 5 - hakodate to lake toya (will need to get a local bus from JR Muroran I think)
Day 6 - day trip to Noboribetsu
Day 7 - bus then train from lake toya to sapporo & fly to osaka, train from osaka to kyoto. (Flying because 2 small children on a 12 hr trip & lots of train changes didn't sound too fun!)
Day trip out of kyoto to nara, perhaps also hiroshima
Day 12 - kyoto to tokyo
Day 19 - back to Narita & fly out

In Tokyo we will have 2 days at Disney & Disney Sea but plan to spend the rest around Tokyo. Should we do those as soon as we get to Tokyo so they would be in the 14 days or is it quite close to get there? We're staying close to the main JR loop near JR Meguro in Tokyo, but we can use the Suica for travel on JR too?

Thankyou very much for your advice. I've been putting it all into a spreadsheet, but I don't really understand all the options.

Hi there,

I would certainly stick to the 14 day JR Pass. Especially since you return to Tokyo on day 12. A normal one way ticket Kyoto - Tokyo is ¥ 13,600 and the difference in price between the 7 day and 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 17,280. Just a ¥ 3,680 difference. The Kintetsu pass is ¥ 3,800, so the JR Pass would be more economic and it also leaves the option for a visit to Hiroshima open. In addition you will also have to pass available for a additional two days in Tokyo (for instance you can use the pass for travel to Disneyland).

Since you plan to do most of your travel between day 1 and 12 I would activate the JR Pass right away and use it for travel to Tokyo. You can always buy a Suica card later on for local travel, they are sold at every JR station.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
