Hi,

My little family is visiting Japan for the first time in Dec. We will have our 18 month old son with us so I'm trying to figure out the best, but also most affordable way to travel with him. Below is our itinerary (it's a work in progress at the moment so I'm open to suggestions/recommendations to make it flow better).

9th Dec - arrive Tokyo
10th Dec - Tokyo -> Kyoto (am trip) - explore Kyoto in afternoon
11th Dec - Kyoto - day trip Hiroshima
12th Dec - Kyoto - Nara (half day)/explore more of Kyoto
13th Dec - Kyoto - Kobe day trip and stay for lights
14th Dec - Kyoto -> Niseko (I'm assuming a domestic flight will be quicker and cheaper)
15th Dec - Niseko
16th Dec - Niseko
17th Dec - Niseko -> Tokyo (again, flight?)
18th Dec - 21st Dec - Explore Tokyo, Disneyland, DisneySea
22nd Dec - Depart Tokyo

Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

In terms of transportation, I recommend using a 7 day JR Pass from Dec 9 - Dec 15 and from there use domestic flights to travel to and from Niseko. This because flights are indeed a lot faster. Trains will also get you there and you will make very good savings if you travel to Hokkaido using the JR Pass. However Kyoto - Niseko for instance is around 10+ hours of travel and I don't think that would work with a toddler. That being said, it will still be a good amount of travel getting from Kyoto - Niseko and Niseko - Tokyo. If snow is what you are after, consider a resort closer to Tokyo. For instance Hakuba, Nagano or GalaYuzawa. You can find many snow resorts using www.snowjapan.com.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel.

After more research we have actually decided to go to Nagano instead of Niseko. I assume the 14 day pass will be the best purchase for our new itinerary?

Hi again!

In that case the best option is to use a 7 day JR Pass from Tokyo - Kyoto - Nagano and purchase a one way ticket to Tokyo from Nagano after the JR Pass expires.
