My family and I are traveling from the US next month and I want to confirm that the US Passport is sufficient to prove JR Rail Pass eligibility and that we are exempt from the visa (as noted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website (https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html).

The best thing regarding visa questions is to ask your local embassy. For many countries, Japan has a visa waiver program, where tourists will receive a visa on arrival. This is the temporary visitor visa (V) and eligible for the JR Pass. Whether this will apply in your individual case, I can't say.
