Hi Mick,
The JR Pass is great when you travel around in the country, or between different cities. For instance Tokyo - Kyoto or Tokyo - Osaka. However it is better to buy normal tickets if you plan to stay locally in Tokyo, as travel within Tokyo is not very expansive.
