We are traveling to Japan next Friday and have not been able to do much planning.
Arrive on Nov 23 at 6pm and depart on Dec 1 at 12:05AM. So basically we are there for 8 days.
1. Does the pass only come in 7 or 14 days? Can you add an extra day?
2. Our plan is the first 4 nights in Tokyo (Nov 23/24/25/26) and 3 nights in Kyoto (Nov 27/28/29) then travel back to Tokyo on the 30th and have to be at the airport around 10pm. 2 of the Tokyo days would be in town, the a day trip to Hakone, and a day trip to Disneyland. No specific plans in Kyoto. Is the Japan Rail Pass a good option for us since most of this will be planned the night before? Are seat reservations going to be a problem?

Hi Kristina,

1.) The JR Pass comes in 7, 14 and 21 days, it is not possible to add extra day. To get the best use out of your pass, I would recommend buying a 7-day JR Pass and then normal tickets or a one way from the airport on the first day.

2.) The JR Pass is similar in price as a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto. So its a very safe bet, any extra travel is basically what you would save. This could be travel to Disneyland, Hakone, local travel on JR train and to/from the airport. Reservations won't be a problem if you make your seat reservations about 1 day in advance.
