Hello,

I am coming to Japan for two weeks from 5th-18th September and am wondering whether I should purchase a 7 day or 14 day JR pass or just pay for travel when I am there.

I plan on doing lots of hiking trips but am on a tight budget so need to know what the most cost efficient way of getting around will be.

I arrive in Tokyo on 5th and plan to stay for a few days before heading to Kawaguchiko to climb Fuji. I then would like to travel to Kyoto for a couple of days and visit Osaka before traveling to Tanabe and Hongu for some more hiking.

From Hongu I would like to get to Nara for one day before returning to Tokyo. I'd also like to go on a day trip to Kamakura from Tokyo before I leave.

Any advise or comments you have on the above itinerary would be hugely appreciated!

Many thanks,

Rosie

Hi Rosie,

Did you know that the 7 day JR Pass is roughly the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto or Tokyo - Osaka on the Shinkansen? Basically if you can use the JR Pass for a return like this, then it becomes a very interesting option, as basically any additional travel would be free. So the question is, whether you could make the trip Fuji - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo within 7 days.

If you plan on a longer period of time in Kyoto/Osaka then I would recommend buying normal tickets.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
