Hi there! I'll be travelling to Japan end-December, and would like to enquire about whether a 14-day pass is the best option.

Here's my itinerary:
16 Dec: Touchdown Tokyo
17 Dec: Tokyo -> Ichinoseki
23 Dec: Ichinoseki -> Kyoto
27 Dec: KIV Kyoto -> Okayama
28 Dec: Back in Tokyo
29 Dec: Tokyo -> Nagoya
30 Dec: Nagoya -> Tokyo

Would appreciate your help on this! As you can see I'm going to quite a few places within Japan, so I'd like to know what is the best way to travel. Thank you very much!

Hi there!

For a 14 day pass to be worthwhile, you'll need to spend over ¥45,100 on JR tickets. Lets take a look at your overall costs, assuming you arrive into Narita:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3,140 (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Ichinoseki: ¥12,470 (153mins, 445km)
  3. Ichinoseki > Kyoto: ¥22,230 (341mins, 958km)
  4. Kyoto > Okayama: ¥7,330 (69mins, 219km)
  5. Okayama > Tokyo: ¥16,360 (253mins, 732km)
  6. Tokyo > Nagoya: ¥10,780 (126mins, 366km)
  7. Nagoya > Tokyo: ¥10,580 (106mins, 366km)
  8. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)

JR ticket cost: ¥86,030 for 8 legs

As you can see, as a base saving you'll make great savings with a 14 day JR Pass. I can recommend the 14 day pass to you based on your travel.
