Hi, we are travelling to Japan in December/ January. We plan to go from Osaka to Kyoto in the afternoon on 29 December using a JR pass.
Q1 Will we be able to turn up and get on a train or should we pre-book using our pass.
Q2 We want to travel to Takayama on 1/1/2015. How best to do this with JR pass to make sure we get on a train (assuming trains operate 1 January)?
Q3 Where will we be able to change money for a reasonable rate during this period?
Travel around Kyoto New Year
Hello there,
1.) Trains between Osaka and Kyoto depart very frequently (up to every 10 minutes). So there's no need to reserve tickets in advance. Most trains are local trains in any event and don't have seat reservations available.
2.) Trains certainly operate on the 1st of January but please be sure to book your tickets as soon as you arrive in Japan.
3.) The best way is to just use your own bank card at a post office ATM which accepts most major foreign cards. For more information see http://www.jp-bank.japanpost.jp/en/ias/en_ias_index.html
Hope this helps!
Daniel
Thankyou, this is very helpful.
Can I confirm, do we book the JR seats at a post office?

Hi Again!
You can reserve seats at any JR station.
The post office is just for money.
