Tokyo to Sappro at evening

Hi there,

There are two options available if you wish to travel from Sapporo - Tokyo (or visa versa) by night train. Both options are covered by the JR Pass and won't require an additional fee.

The first is Sapporo - Aomori by night train, this train is called the Hamanasu and departs Sapporo at 22:00 sharp. You can than take the Tohoku shinkansen from Shin-Aomori the following morning to Tokyo.

The 2nd is the Akebono train from Aomori to Tokyo overnight. This would mean taking a normal train from Sapporo to Aomori and taking a normal train from Sapporo - Aomori during the day/evening.

Do note that night trains can sell out quickly, so be sure to make your reservation on time and have a second plan ready, just in case.

The Akenono leaves Ueno station (Tokyo) at 21:16 and arrives in Aomori the following morning 9:56. I remember making the trip at the end of March this year. I was so sleepy and happy to find a Starbucks in Aomori. Trains for Aomori leave every 30min.

As for the Hamanasu train from Aomori to Sapporo leaves at 22:42 and arrives at 06:07.

You do need to be in possession of the JR Pass to reserve a seat but your first day of use my be in the future.
