I've had a good read here and on TA and was wondering if someone with experience could look this over for me please:

25 March arrive Haneda 0730, collect 14 day JR pass to use from the 27th.

25-28th Tokyo with a day trip to Kamakura

28th Tokyo to Odawara buy Hakone free pass

28th and 29th Hakone with a full day sightseeing on the 28th

30th Hakone to Takayama via Nagoya overnight Takayama

31st Takayama to Kanazawa with overnight

1st Kanazawa to Kyoto for 2 nights

3rd Kyoto to Mount Koya for overnight

4th Osaka

5th Miyajima via Hiroshima for 2 nights with a full day to visit Hiroshima

7th back to Tokyo

9th depart for the UK

This gives me 3 nights in Tokyo at the beginning and 2 at the end, I intend to forward the luggage Tokyo to Hakone, Hakone to Kyoto and hopefully Kyoto to Tokyo and travel with lighter bags for 2 or 3 days. Would people recommend back packs or small wheeled cases?

Finally, I know it's been asked lots of times, but looking at this particular itinerary is it worth the £100 each for the green pass?

It's my first time to Japan so would really be grateful for any hints or tweaks from the pro's.

Hello there,

Depending on the amount of luggage, you could also consider just taking it with you on the train. Using 1 backpack or suitcase is not much of a hassle and you could use the saved money on a 1st Class upgrade (Green Class).

Your itinerary already looks good for the route traveled, there's no back tracking and you've got many great places planned in. I do think it would be nice to have Green Class for this route but ordinary class will be good as well.

Going back from Hiroshima to Tokyo in one go is quite a long trip. Consider adding in a stop over at Himeji to view the castle before traveling on to Tokyo. You could walk around Himeji for 1-2h before getting on the train again. Alternatively you could make a stop at Osaka for lunch.

Thanks Daniel, really appreciate the reply.

I was thinking about Himeji for a 2 hour stop, it wouldn't matter how late I got back into Tokyo. I was actually going to take my cases on this leg, is there a left luggage area while we go sightseeing?

The other thing I thought about doing was adding a third night in Kyoto and reducing to one night back in Tokyo at the end?

There are coin lockers on every station, some can store a full sized suitcase. This is perfect if you just want to do a quick stopover.

Bigger stations like Tokyo and Kyoto also have a cloakroom service.

Personally I like 2 days at the end in Tokyo for shopping but the time is spend just as well in Kyoto.
