Looking for snow

Hi!

We will be in Japan from Dec 20 to 29 and will have 2 legs of the trip :

osaka dec 20 to 25
tokyo dec 25 to 29

We're looking at side trips while in osaka going to nara and kobe (we've been to kyoto before so no need to go back). While in Tokyo, we were thinking of doing a side trip to Yokohama and another to any snowy place. From my research, it seems that karuizawa, nikko and niigata are the nearest places to go for a day trip or is there another place? We're travelling with kids so we're like your opinion on:

1) which resort is closest tokyo via shinkansen for snow AND most conducive for kids? We dont need to ski just play with snow but preferrably a resort we can hang around in during the day.

2) is there anything you can suggest/comment on in terms of our general/whole itinerary?

Hello Katrina,

Japan is pretty great when it comes down to snow. There are many places you could visit. Personally I'd take the Shinkansen into Nagano prefecture and visit a resort there, such as Yuzawa. There's a great website http://snowjapan.com/ which has a lot of information. I don't have kids myself, so I may not be the best one to ask for direct recommendations. However Nozowa (also in Nagano) is very popular with kids and also has some great onsen.

2.) It looks good, if you are considering visiting Universal City in Osaka, then I would recommend doing so as early as possible as it could get crowded near the end of the year.

Travel time is a major consideration though. Is there any other place to consider aside from Nagano closer to Tokyo? :)

Gala Yuzawa is a great place for snow and can even be visited as a day trip from Tokyo. Might be worth your consideration :)

Hi Daniel! I just want to take the time to thank you. We went to Gala Yuzawa today and it was perfect! the kids enjoyed playing in the snow and the place was so accessible. It was exactly what we were looking for. Thank you for your recommendation. Much much appreciated!
