Can anyone tell me a good route to go from Takayama to see the snow monkeys, or am I better off going back to Tokyo and doing the Snow Monkeys as a day trip.

Hello there,
The route will be much easier to travel with the opening of the new Hokuriku Shinkansen line next week. The route FK mentions is indeed the best way.
From Nagano, you will still have to travel to the Snow Monkey Park (jigokudani). Here is how to access the park.
