I'm planning to buy a 7 day pass but will be effectively spending 8 days in Japan. Is the pass valid for 7 days meaning from time of activation. Example I'll be activating my pass in Osaka at 16:30 December 28 when will my pass expire- January 4th 16:30? or when?

The JR Pass is valid for 7 consecutive days, the first day is counted as a full day (no matter what time you start using it). For instance activating the pass on a Monday will make it valid until the end of the next Sunday.
