If we buy the pass now for a planned trip next year and end up not going, is the pass refundable?
Refund ability
Hi there,
Yes it is possible to get a refund for unused JR Passes up to one year after purchase if you still have the voucher.
Please note that a refund fee applies and you will have to return to voucher before a refund can be processed.
I would therefor recommend buying the JR Pass when around 30-60 days before you leave, this way you can be sure about your plans.
I hope this helps,
Daniel
Have they changed the rules about purchasing the voucher? There used to be a limit of 90 days from the day you buy the voucher to when you can exchange it for the actual pass. Has that changed as well? (I asked about passport numbers not being needed anymore). I always thought it was no more than 90 days out.
No, they haven't. You can activate the JR Pass up to 90 days after purchase (this is why there is an intended usage date in the order form) and select a first day up to 30 days in the future the moment when you activate the JR Pass.
For refunds only: it may happen that you are unable to go to Japan or not decide to use this JR Pass. In such a case, you can return the unused voucher to us up to 1 year after purchase for a refund.
More information about ordering and purchasing can be found here.
I hope this clears things up!
Daniel
