I would like to go to Nagano in February 2015 and plan to buy JR Kanto Area Pass. However, the pass is valid to go to Karuizawa only and is it a must to pay the difference of Shinkensan fare between Karuizawa to Nagano? Any other ways to go?

Hello there,
You could use local trains instead of the Shinkansen. However this does add extra travel time.
