Regional versus JR

We are a group of 5 adults who will use trains/buses for our 28 days in Japan.
Itinerary
Tokyo 5 nights( will buy daily passes for 3 of these days)
Hakone 4 nights ( Will use Hakone Free Pass)
Nakatsugawa 2 nights
Takayama 5 nights
Kanazawa 2 nights
Kyoto 4 nights
? 3 nights- perhaps Hiroshima or between Kyoto and Hiroshima Tokyo 1 night.
I thought a 21 JR pass starting from the day we leave Hakone would work, however have just been looking at Takayama-Hokuriku-area-tourist-pass which seems to cover us from Nogoya through to Kyoto- which is a total of 10 days- can we buy two passes each to cover 10 days?
I think we would then need to buy a ticket from Hakone to Nogoya and then maybe a 7 day JR pass for the last week which would cover a couple of day trips from Kyoto.

Can you confirm that we can but two Takayama passes each and that my thinking above is correct - if not would it just be best to buy a 21 day JR pass from the day we leave Hakone.

Thanks so much.

Hi Wendy,

Yes, you can get more than 1 pass of each type. However, do be sure to check ahead of time if this will actually help you make savings. Personally, I'd opt for the 14 or 21 day JR Pass, the flexibility is much better and often the price is much better too, when buying a longer single pass, rather than a combination of passes.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
