Which pass would you recommend?

Hi,

We are planning to travel Mar 31 from Tokyo to Osaka, staying in Osaka for 4 days and using that as our base to make daytrips to Kyoto, Nara, etc. Then Apr 4 heading from Osaka to Lake Kawaguchi (staying overnight 1 night) and then finally back to Tokyo on Apr 5.

Would you recommend the 7 day JR pass or would it be better to use the Hokuriku Arch pass? Or would it make more sense to purchase singe trips to and from Tokyo and then use a regional pass in and around Osaka/Kyoto?

Also, one last question, is it better to purchase a pocket wifi or eSim for our stay? What are the pros and cons of each?

Thanks!

Hi there,

The Hokuriku Arch Pass is a cheaper option, but because it doesn't cover the Tokaido Shinkansen it makes the journey from Tokyo to Osaka significantly longer. Alternatively, the JR Pass would be a more expensive option but it would drastically reduce your overall travel time by giving you access to all Shinkansen routes. It therefore comes down to whether you're prioritising the cheapest or quickest option.

In terms of choosing Pocket Wifi or an eSim, it comes down to whether you'll be using a lot of data for internet access or not. Pocket Wifi gives you 5GB of data per day of your trip, so if you're planning on using a lot of data I would certainly recommend Pocket Wifi as it may come out to be less than purchasing an eSim. Hope this helps!
