Hi Bron,

Yes - on the Sunrise seto there are no regular sitting up seats. If you are travelling with a JR Pass you can use the nobi-nobi 'seats' for free which are carpeted areas where you can recline.

Hope this helps!

From reading other Q & A s on this site it appears we would have no chance of arriving at Narita at 7pm, getting and validating the Pass, and reserving a nobi-nobi seat for travel the same night from Tokyo to Okayama.

From the information on the above mentioned site it It is not clear to me how much a Pass holder would have to pay for the other other options. Does one have to pay the whole of the additional charge for say the Sunrise Twin, including the Express Surcharge?

Also are the sleeping berths as hard to bookk at short notice as the nobi-nobi seats?

A single person in a sunrise twin private room on the Seto is around ¥10,000 for JR Pass holders. Please note that this is based on dual occupancy. The express surcharge will not be covered by the rail pass so you would have to pay this plus the room charge.

In general the cheaper berths will fill before the more expensive berths - availability also depends on the day of the week you decide to travel, with weekends busier than weekdays.

Hope this helps!
