Hi,

I will be arriving by train into Kyoto on the 23rd September.

From there I intend to have a day trip to Nikko and Arishiyama as well as a day and a half exploring Kyoto. On the 27th I need to get to Kansai airport by train.

Is it worth getting the Kansai pass or should I buy individual tickets?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I recommend using a 7 day JR Pass if you head to Nikko. It is quite a trip and you can make good savings if you head there. However are you sure that you mean Nikko? As it is quite a ride from Kyoto and not really recommend as a day trip from there.

A Kansai Pass is not useful, as you would not be able to make savings with it and it does not include travel to Nikko.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Apologies, I meant Nara!

Thank you very much, Daniel.

If Nara, then a 7 day JR Pass would not pay off. For many people, buying regular tickets for the same local area should do fine. If you travel a lot though, then a regional pass might pay off. A Hankyu tourist pass is one inexpensive and easy way to save money. But if you plan to see Himeji Castle, which is the finest in Japan, a JR Kansai Area Pass can save you a lot of money.
